An Elderly Friendly Dwelling through Material & Tactile-Based Zoning Strategy

Abstract

This house was built for its primary occupant, an elderly person, and serves as a gathering place for large families almost every weekend. As a result, the focus is on making the house elderly-friendly while providing flexible spaces for family gatherings or guests, all while preserving the occupants' privacy. To achieve this, the house is designed with three main strategies: first, zoning based on materials and colors; second, the flexibility and expansibility of space; and third, a tactile approach to materials throughout the house. As a result, the zoning and material tactile strategies create two main masses of the house, composed of various materials and textures. These three design strategies are intended to create an elderly-friendly home for its inhabitants, enabling them to live comfortably and enhance their quality of life in the future.

Author Biography

Cipta Hadi, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara

Cipta Hadi, originally from Pontianak, West Kalimantan, started his career as a junior architect in 2016 at Andyrahman Architect in Sidoarjo. After leaving this role, he pursued a master's degree in Urban Design at FTUI from 2019 to 2021. In 2019, he co-founded Awanama, an architectural studio, with two partners. His primary focus in every project is the well-being of users, alongside environmental and social impacts. Cipta has actively participated in design competitions throughout his studies in architecture, winning two first prizes and placing in the top five of several competitions. As an urbanist, he is particularly interested in housing, settlements, public spaces, and informal urbanism. To share his ideas more broadly, Cipta also teaches in the Architecture program at Multimedia Nusantara University.
