Abstract

This study examines the role of set and property design as a visual medium to represent the early stage of grief experienced by the character Raka in the short film The House of Lost and Found. Employing a qualitative practice-based approach, the research integrates theories of mise-en-scène, set and property design, and grief—particularly the denial stage and the concept of continuing bonds. The design process included script analysis, development of visual concepts, and implementation within emotionally significant domestic spaces, namely the mother’s bedroom and the kitchen. The findings indicate that meaningful objects, wooden materials, and subdued color palettes effectively convey the psychological state of a character who maintains symbolic attachment to a deceased figure. This study demonstrates that artistics plays a crucial role in constructing emotional narratives and serves as an effective means of visualizing psychological conditions in film.
