Abstract

Meaning in film can be conveyed through various methods, one of which is editing techniques. Intellectual montage is an editing technique that combines two or more contrasting images to create a specific meaning. In the short film As the Wind Blows, intellectual montage is used to create dramatic irony in Scene 12 and Scene 13 (A, B, C). In these scenes, Abyan listens to a voice note from his mother while recalling happy moments with her, although in reality she has already left him. This study discusses how the application of intellectual montage combines different images within a scene to construct new meaning. The practice-led research method is used in this study to strengthen the analysis and creative outcomes. Overall, this technique effectively builds dramatic irony in most scenes. However, in Scene 13C, the visual contrast is less strong, requiring additional sound elements to clarify the intended conflict of meaning. Thus, the application of intellectual montage is proven to be effective in creating dramatic irony in the short film As the Wind Blows.
